Draw animals like a pro with Aaron Blaise

Long earlier I was a managing director and animator with Walt Disney Characteristic Animation, I was a lover of wildlife. Growing up equally a fleck of a wild child in the swamps of s Florida, I would typically exist found running through the forest, barefoot of course, tracking animals. I would draw them in my sketchbooks or fifty-fifty collect the bones of animal kills and save them for afterward study.

It was always my dream to exist an illustrator for National Geographic and to meet the globe. Instead, I went on to Disney and a successful animation career, but I still found a style to pursue my love of cartoon animals by working on archetype films similar The Lion King and Brother Deport. Now I want to share some of the knowledge from my years of studying animals with you!

01. Notice first

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

Earlier you lot first to draw, cease and really expect. Take a moment to observe and report the animate being. How does it move? Often yous'll notice patterns of movement. What's the animal doing?

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

Tin you anticipate where it will exist next? If it'due south a hot day it might exist heading for shade, for example. These sorts of details can be crucial in helping y'all capture details because animals often won't sit still and pose for you – especially in the wild!

02. Do your research before you lot get in that location

(Prototype: © Aaron Blaise)

I do my homework on what animals I'll see in a particular surface area. For instance, on a trip to Alaska I may try to learn everything I tin can about grizzly bears, muskox and moose before I make it. I'll report books and practise enquiry to learn about their muscles, skeletons and patterning. I'll even sentinel live webcams of an area to give me a sense of the environment. This information volition aid me when I'g on location, and save a lot of time.

03. Take a mental picture

(Paradigm: © Aaron Blaise)

Animals often don't sit yet. To gainsay this I've adult a technique of taking a mental snapshot. I don't stare at the animate being the entire fourth dimension I'm drawing. Instead, I'll glance at the animal and then quickly look abroad to my page.

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

By doing this the concluding prototype of the animal that I saw is frozen in my mind. Combined with my research on beefcake, I'1000 able to get an accurate drawing down on the page.

04. Break the body up into sections

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

This is an ascertainment I've made over the years. Near quadrupeds tin can be cleaved downwardly into six main areas: the head, the neck, the front legs and shoulders, the body, the rear legs and hips, and finally the tail. This may seem like a elementary observation, but once you break the animate being up this way yous can overlap those areas in any orientation in space.

05. Empathise basic comparative anatomy

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

People ask how practice I know all these details virtually the animals I draw? The answer is: I don't! Only I do know comparative anatomy. About animals, specially mammals, take even so "parts" – merely spaced out differently. And this is true of humans as well. Once I understood that

I have basically the same parts as a lion, just in unlike locations, information technology was a eureka moment in my power to draw them.

06. Spotter your proportions

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

Now that you sympathize that most animals have the same bones and muscle groups as yous exercise, it's only a matter of playing with the proportions and getting those correct. This is primarily a matter of practice and repetition. But in one case you start to get the spacing and proportions right, you'll be able to draw your subject in any pose or angle.

07. Use blackness and white ink on midtone paper

(Prototype: © Aaron Blaise)

How to enhance a pencil drawing of a lion'south head with inks, bringing it to life:

a). Create a rough sketch

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

Beginning lay in a rough drawing in pencil bearing in heed all the tips you take already learned then far. It's okay to be loose at this stage. This can give your piece of work a dynamic border! You'll refine the image in the later steps.

b). Add together darks to the drawing

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

Next, utilize a brush pen and/or brawl point pen to lay downward the darks. Use waterproof ink hither in instance y'all desire to add watercolour or a wash subsequently. Try to work in ane consequent direction so you don't smear the ink.

c). Use white ink for highlights

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

Now use a white pen (I similar Sakura Gelly Whorl pens (opens in new tab) for this) and add final accents and highlights. Considering you started with a mid- tone and not on white yous can go lighter and make information technology pop! Apply markers to add more than shading.

08. Stay loose and find the flow

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

This is similar to step six if you want to become down a gesture of your pose right abroad. The creature is likely to move on you, so you need to go the essence of the pose fast. If you're drawing a tiger or king of beasts you need to become the action and don't worry about every stripe and whisker. Instead, await for the line of action and rhythm to the pose.

09. Capture skilful silhouettes

(Paradigm: © Aaron Blaise)

The basics of good beast cartoon are not that different from drawing a practiced human character. You lot want their pose to read every bit clearly and concisely every bit possible. If your silhouette isn't articulate and so the drawing won't be understood by the viewer. It's the same whether you're cartoon an elephant, a bear or any other animate being.

ten. Use overlapping shapes to create depth

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

Once you're happy capturing the different shapes of your chosen animal, try overlapping them. This will give your image a sense of depth and space in the frame. Properly overlapping each shape will give your drawings a sense of believability and life.

11. Create action and drama

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

Animals are living creatures. If y'all've been out in the wild cartoon you'll accept noticed that they're always on the motility. You lot should be capturing this in your drawings every bit well. While there's zip incorrect with a skillful beast portrait (so to speak), I've found that images of animals in activity always get a bigger response and take more impact. Work hard to develop a sense of drama and life into your images.

12. Be mindful of low-cal and shadow

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

Proper use of light and shadow in your image can aid raise the feeling of drama that we discussed in step 11. I'll ofttimes push or exaggerate the lighting of nature to raise that feeling. Used properly, a dramatically cast shadow tin deeply raise the mood of your image as well as give it a sense of time and identify.

13. Await for the large shapes commencement

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

A typical error that I meet artists make is they get too caught up in the details right away. Yous don't demand to practise that. Instead, get down the big shapes first. For example, if yous're drawing an elephant and then notice the large "bean shape" of the torso and lay that in, followed by the triangle or wedge shape of the head. Get their placement correct and the rest volition come together quickly.

14. Look for emotion and personality

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

Whether drawing an beast that'southward realistic or cartoony, try to go equally much personality equally possible into the image. As humans we look for this naturally and gravitate towards it. Use that to your reward whenever possible. A piffling exaggeration or emphasis can go a long fashion.

fifteen. Be selective when drawing your brute's hair and fur

(Paradigm: © Aaron Blaise)

There'south no demand to be too detailed here. You lot don't need or want to draw each and every pilus on an beast. Instead, brand marks in key spots to suggest it. Places where the trunk bends are a swell spot to indicate a pilus pause.
